EXCERPT / QUOTES

The novel abounds with many ironic and cynical quotes, which were created by reshaping and abusing the seven main commandments of Animal Farm, enacted after the animals liberated the farm from humans and gained freedom. In the beginning, they read as follows:

1. Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy.
2. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend.
3. No animal shall wear clothes.
4. No animal shall sleep in a bed.
5. No animal shall drink alcohol.
6. No animal shall kill any other animal.
7. All animals are equal.

But when they were altered to justify the arbitrariness and power of the pigs, by the same pigs themselves, they looked like this:
"No animal shall sleep in a bed - WITH SHEETS"
"No animal shall drink alcohol - TO EXCESS"
"No animal shall kill another - WITHOUT CAUSE"
"All animals are born equal - BUT SOME ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS."

There were also grand promises that the pigs made to be chosen as leaders by the other animals:
"Vote for Snowball and a three-day workweek."
Or:
"Vote for Napoleon and full mangers."

The pigs even turned their incompetence into their merit by twisting the truth. For example:
"We have only taken what we already had before," said Boxer.
"That is our victory," replied the pig Squealer.

There was also a sentence used by the pigs to keep all the other animals obedient out of fear, which was the threat of the return of human rule over the farm:

"Do you want Jones to come back?!"
